It erases a decal instead of scraping it

A razor blade gouges. A heat gun and a fingernail take an afternoon. This is a thick disc of soft natural rubber that you chuck into an ordinary drill and run flat against the panel. The rubber grabs the vinyl and the adhesive and rolls them off in crumbs, the way a pencil eraser takes graphite off paper - by friction, not by cutting.

Old racing stripes, dealer badges, pinstripes, boat lettering, double-sided molding tape, the rectangle of adhesive left behind by a wind deflector. It is the same tool body shops use for the same job, and it turns an afternoon of picking and scraping into a few passes with the drill you already own.

Rated 5.0 by 10 buyers

Buyers use it on truck hoods, pontoon boats, chrome badging and door edges, and they keep telling us the same thing: it takes the vinyl and the adhesive off and leaves the paint looking right.

Dave O.
“Easy to use and did not damage my hood trying to remove adhesive residue from an old wind guard from the hood of my truck.”

Jose M.
“Once you get the angle and speed right, it just erases the vinyl like it was a chalk drawing.”

Bryan E.
“It removed the decals without damaging the surfaces, and I was pleasantly surprised by how quickly it worked.”

David L.
“It glides smoothly over car surfaces, leaving no scratches or marks behind. The time and effort it saves me are invaluable.”

Morris C.
“It saved me hours of manual scraping and rubbing. Highly recommended for anyone looking to maintain their vehicle's appearance.”

Michael V.
“Used this as directed and it took it all off. … No damage to my car's paint either.”

Set your drill to 1,500-3,000 rpm and let the rubber do the work

The maker's working range is 1,500 to 3,000 rpm, and the rating is molded right into the rubber face, alongside the wear line: MAX 4000. Most cordless drills on their low gear sit right in that band, so for most people the setup is simply low gear and a light squeeze of the trigger. A corded drill with a speed dial works just as well when you dial it into the range.

The wheel is built for cured automotive paint - acrylic enamel and urethane clear coat, the finish on a modern car. In that range, with light pressure and a steady sweep, the soft rubber lifts the decal and glides over the paint without gouging or scratching it.

The other molded marking is the stop use line, an arc on the face of the disc. As the rubber wears the teeth get shorter, and the line tells you exactly when the wheel has done its job and a fresh one should take over. You always know how much rubber you have left.

Why the edge is cut into teeth

The working edge is castellated - chunky square blocks with wide open notches between them, staggered so the gaps on one side face the blocks on the other. That shape does two jobs.

It lets air through the cut, so the heat that friction generates has somewhere to go instead of soaking into one point on the panel. And it lets the crumb clear. A solid disc loads up with a rolled sausage of rubber and old adhesive; this one throws it off and keeps presenting fresh rubber to the work.

Use the full width of the wheel flat against the surface. All of the wheel's teeth then share the work, which is what makes it fast and even.

Made for the finish on your car

Painted steel and aluminum panels with a cured factory or refinish clear coat are exactly what this wheel is designed for: door edges, hoods, quarter panels, fenders, tailgates. It lifts old stripes, dealer badges, chrome lettering and the tape that holds body moldings, and it works the same way on the painted surfaces of trucks, boats, RVs and motorcycles.

How to actually do it

  • Wash the area first with soap and water, so the wheel works on a clean panel.
  • Screw the wheel onto the arbor and tighten it, then clamp the arbor's round shank in the drill chuck. Give it a spin by hand to check it is running true.
  • Put your safety glasses on. The wheel sends rubber crumb and old adhesive off at speed.
  • Start the drill before the wheel touches the panel.
  • Work from the top of the decal downward with light to medium pressure, sweeping side to side so the wheel is always moving.
  • If the panel feels warm to the back of your hand, pause and let it cool, then carry on.
  • Finish the leftover adhesive shadow with a mild solvent and a cloth. The wheel takes the bulk; the solvent takes the film, and the panel comes up clean.

Which thickness to buy

The two options are the thickness of the wheel - how wide the working face is. Both discs are the same size across and use the same rubber compound.

  • 0.79 in (20 mm) - the narrower face. Easy to steer into a tight strip, along a molding line or around a badge recess.
  • 0.98 in (25 mm) - the wider face. Covers a broad graphic or a long stripe in fewer passes, and is the most forgiving on a big flat panel.

Taking one large decal off a door or a boat hull? Take the wider one. Picking adhesive out of trim gaps and badge outlines? Take the narrower one.
