Put the massage exactly where you ache

Most back massagers have their mechanism bolted where the factory put it. This one works the other way round. The mat has two pockets, one at the head end and one further down, and two working parts that you move between them by hand. Where the massage happens is your decision.

Slide the kneading unit to your neck and shoulders after a day at the desk, or to your lower back after a workout, and let warmth and deep kneading do the rest.

The massage mat laid out flat, showing the mesh-covered kneading pillow at the head end, the second pad further down, the corded handset and the rubber hand pump

A shiatsu kneading unit and an air bag you pump by hand

The first part is a shiatsu kneading module: rounded nodes that rotate behind a black mesh window, so you feel them directly rather than through a slab of padding. It presses and circles into the muscles along your neck, shoulders and back.

The second is an inflatable air bag with a rubber squeeze bulb on a hose. Pump it up by hand until the lift under your lower back or the nape of your neck feels just right, and let it back down when you want to lie flat. You are in control, with nothing to set up.

Two parts, two pockets, your choice

Kneading at your neck and shoulders with the air bag lifting under your waist. Or swap them, and put the kneading into your lower back with the air bag supporting your neck. It takes a few seconds and no tools, and the handset has a dedicated positioning button for setting where the unit works.

The kneading unit sits at the neck with the airbag at the waist, or the two are swapped over

Warmth on its own button

Heat has its own control, separate from the massage. Some evenings you want warmth and nothing else; some you want the kneading with the heat off. Run either one on its own or both together. On a cold night the warmth is often the whole reason people get the mat out.

On the bed, on the floor, or over a chair

It is a mat, long enough to lie on from the back of your head to about mid-calf, and roughly shoulder width. It goes on top of the bedding, on the floor in front of the television, or on a sofa.

A firm surface gives you even more: on the floor the kneading unit has everything to push against. Draped over an armchair with the head end up the back, you get the same unit against your shoulders sitting upright.

Sitting up, not just lying down

Laid over an armchair or a recliner, the raised head-pillow end sits behind your neck and shoulders and the rest runs down the seat. It is the position most people end up using on a weeknight, because you can do it without leaving the chair you were already in.

Folds flat and goes away

This is the part a massage chair cannot do. It folds into flat layers, roughly like a folded blanket, and lives on a shelf or in a cupboard between uses. Unplug it, let it cool and fold it along its natural lines.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use it in bed?

Yes. It goes on top of your bedding, and many buyers use it in the evening to wind down. Buyers say: “I love using it before bed!” — Elias O.

Is it good for a sore back?

Buyers love it for tired backs and shoulders: “This mat is a lifesaver for my stiff back.” — Jack T. Move the kneading unit to the spot you want and add heat.

How does it compare with a massage chair?

A chair braces the mechanism against a rigid frame. A mat works with your own bodyweight for an even, full-contact kneading, goes on your bed, floor, sofa or armchair, and folds flat into a cupboard afterwards.

How big is it?

It is long enough for an adult to lie on from the back of the head to roughly mid-calf, and about shoulder width. On a double bed there is plenty of bedding either side of it.

Does the heat run without the massage?

Yes. Heat has its own button on the handset, separate from the massage controls, so you can run either one on its own or both together.

Is the handset wired or wireless?

Wired. The handset is on a cable running to a control box on the edge of the mat, so it stays with the mat and cannot be lost down the side of the sofa.

Is the air bag automatic?

It is inflated by hand with a rubber squeeze bulb on a hose, so you stop squeezing when the lift feels right. Release it to let the mat go flat again.

How loud is it?

Buyers describe a faint buzzing sound while it kneads, a relaxing background hum for your evening.

Which plug should I choose?

Whichever matches your wall sockets: US, UK or EU. The mat is identical across all three and only the plug on the end of the cable differs.

What do the handset buttons do?

Six buttons, each with one job: power and timer, mode, strength, speed, positioning and heat. The labels on the handset are printed in Chinese.
